Des idées pour construire des écrans plats, on n'en manque pas. Certaines paraissent étranges : ainsi l'écran plat à particules magnétiques de Magnavox Compagny : chaque particule est une petite bille dont un demi-hémisphère est noir et l'autre blanc; elle pivote dans une cavité sous l'action d'un champ magnétique engendré par deux réseaux croisés de conducteurs électriques. Un écran de 1000 X 1000 billes serait faisable et, avec des billes multicolorées (d'une dizaine de microns de diamètre!), on pourrait même réaliser un écran couleurs.
